Agar Fun

My Biotechnology students cooked and poured agar plates and the next day went around the building swabbing every surface you can imagine and many you don’t want to imagine. This activity is fun and is practice for another lab coming up in a few days. We don’t know for sure what is growing in the plates but they surely grew out bacteria, fungus, and mold. The comparison of the toilet seat and water bottle straw is interesting and gag-worthy, especially to the owner of the water bottle. When I first saw the hand sanitizer bottle growth I said, “Aw, the irony,” but one of my genius students explained the purpose of the sanitizer and the contamination on the bottle and pump handle should be expected. Contaminated dispenser facilitates sanitized hands.

End of First Semester

The school year is flying by. I’m working on my grade book to make sure I submit grades on time. This year we have to attach competencies, curriculum items, to assignments and didn’t know about it until a few weeks ago. It’s a challenge as the Medical Assistant course is actually two courses and we do some curriculum items in MA II so we are having to get them done before the end of first semester. No big deal in the big picture. It’ll get done.
